Is Kelowna ready for transit police?

Councillor Luke Stack has floated the idea of police or peace officers for the Kelowna Regional Transit System.

During councillor comments at Monday害羞草研究所檚 (June 17) meeting, Stack said he began thinking about it while council and staff members were in Calgary attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference (June 6-9).

He said he was impressed by the presence of police officers, and security and transit peace officers in the downtown core. Stack noted transit is an important plank in Kelowna害羞草研究所檚 future growth.

Stack pointed out that to attract those riders they need to feel that transit is safe, efficient and clean.

According to the Calgary Transit website, peace officers patrol 24 hours, seven days a week. Security guards are staffed at select transit stations providing a deterrent to crime and drug use.

The Metro Vancouver Transit Police is the only dedicated service in Canada focused on reducing crime and social disorder in and around a public transportation system.
