It害羞草研究所檚 been one year since a neighbourhood in Rutland was placed on lockdown with residents confined to their homes, as the Emergency Response Team and RCMP descended on Cactus Road and engaged in a 10-hour standoff.

Eight people were arrested following the standoff on Dec. 30, and one person was charged.

Michael Dennison faced charges including careless use or storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a licence and/or registration, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Dennison appeared in court in April and is set to be back before a provincial court judge on Jan. 4 in Kelowna.

The standoff began after a Kelowna RCMP Officer noticed a white Ford Escape parked on Cactus Road that matched the description of a vehicle that was previously deemed suspicious. Two people drove the Ford Escape to a gas station, without realizing that they were being followed by police. Once stopped at the pumps, the mountie attempted to approach the vehicle.

The vehicle then sped off down a busy road while swerving in and out of oncoming traffic. Police told Capital News at the time that officers did not pursue due to public safety.

Another officer in the area found firearms and ammunition on the side of the road, and it is believed that it was thrown out of the window of the Ford during their attempt to flee police.

The vehicle returned to Cactus Road, and the occupants escaped into the house at 1075 Cactus Road in Rutland, an address that was familiar to the RCMP. In total seven people were arrested from the house.

Neighbours spoke to Capital News during the standoff and said that police are often seen at the residence. One person who lives in the area said that he has seen people around the house with guns and has called the police on more than one occasion.

During the incident, a man who lived two doors down from the house police had surrounded became upset with their presence in the neighbourhood and reportedly threatened the officers.

It was discovered the man had warrants out for his arrest and he was taken into custody. He faced further charges of uttering threats, and possible weapons-related charges. His name was not made public.

According to B.C. Provincial Court documents, Dennison has a lengthy criminal record, including a police incident on William R. Bennett Bridge in January 2017.
