Black Press Media asked politicians in the Central Okanagan for their highlights of 2023.

In 2023, the board of directors approved the RDCO Strategic Priorities.

With an intentional lens to enhance residentsº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™ quality of life, the priorities focus on increasing access to outdoor open space, enhancing health partnerships, and taking action on climate change.

The RDCOº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™s commitment to truth and reconciliation continued alongside Westbank First Nation (WFN), a community-to-community forum was held, and the RDCO was selected by the province as one of five regional districts to explore changes to local governments that empower Indigenous decision-making.

To address financial inequities, a new policy was created to redistribute Community Works grants to support infrastructure on syilx lands, based on population.

A highlight of 2023 was in May when Johnº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™s Family Nature Conservancy was declared the third Nocturnal Preserve in Canada by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

This designation showcased our commitment to environmental preservation.

In July, Sally Ginter joined us as Chief Administrative Officer, bringing a direction of strong leadership with a vision for growth and innovation to better serve the Central Okanagan.

While 2023 brought progress, it also tested us with the McDougall Creek Wildfire.

Our community demonstrated the true meaning of unity, supporting each other and our first responders.

The end of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 will largely be dedicated to working with the province and our emergency management partners to better prevent and enhance processes and preparations for future emergencies.

In November, the annual board of directors leadership vote took place.

Iº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™m honoured to continue serving as board chair, supported by the election of Kevin Kraft as the new vice chair, who will bring a unique and valuable lens to the leadership table.

West Kelowna Mayor Gord Milsom, in the spirit of enabling opportunities to other board directors, declined to run again as vice chair.

We are grateful for his exceptional leadership and mentorship over the past five years.

As we usher in 2024, I wish you peace, prosperity, and continued community strength.

Let us bring the spirit of togetherness into 2024 and make the Central Okanagan an even more extraordinary place to be.

A Happy New Year to you and your families!

Looking ahead, 2024 is off to a great start as we mark 50 years of regional parks in the Central Okanagan.

I look forward to seeing you out on the trails.
