PHOTOS: First Nations unite at Okanagan Indian Band powwow

The second annual Komasket Powwow runs until 7 p.m. Sunday

First Nations from far and wide have converged on the arbour in Komasket Park off Westside Road for the second annual Komasket Powwow.

Presented by the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) and held on OKIB land, the three-day event signifies a return to the band's powwow tradition.

The powwow started Friday and runs until 7 p.m. Sunday, featuring traditional dancing, live music, arts and crafts, cultural workshops and Indigenous eats.

Surrounding the outskirts of the arbour are more than 50 craft vendors, as well as 10 food trucks.

Asten Big Sorrel Horse, from the Tk害羞草研究所檈ml煤ps te Secwepemc Nation, performed at the powwow.

"The powwow is awesome, it's a beautiful day, everyone's enjoying themselves and getting to see family and friends," he said.

Big Sorrel Horse said he believes the Komasket Powwow will get bigger and better as the years go on.

More than 1,000 people are expected to take in the powwow over the three days.

A grand entry was held Saturday at 1 p.m. to kick off the day's action. A grand entry is when all dancers come together in the centre of the arbour, forming an impressive spectacle.

"It's usually the most spectacular part of the weekend," said powwow organizer Viola Brown.

The grand entry was followed by a prayer from an Elder and opening remarks from dignitaries.

Another grand entry will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday. Anyone is invited to attend the weekend's events.
