There is a change to the Alternative Approval Process (AAP) to borrow $8 million to help build a new Firehall #32 in West Kelowna.

Staff told council at its Feb. 13 meeting that advertising for the process will start on Feb. 16 and the start date will be Feb. 20. The AAP will close on Mar. 21 at 4:30 p.m.

If at least 10 per cent of 28,098 electors object to long-term borrowing, then the AAP would fail and council would have to look at alternative funding or drop the project.

Eligible voters must be 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, and a resident of B.C. for the past six months.

Residents in favour of borrowing the funds do not have to fill out a form which will be available at city hall on Feb. 20 starting at 8:30 a.m.

The total cost to replace Firehall #32 value is $14.3 million.

Other funding is coming from reserve funds ($3.8 million), parks development cost charges ($1.18 million), Growing Communities Fund ($1.17 million), and $150,000 from developer contributions.

Borrowing the $8 million will not result in new taxes for residents.

The new fire hall will be built at 860 Anders Road, just down the street from its current location on Ollala Road.
