The BC Wildfire Service reported it was working to establish ground access to the Mara Mountain fire burning southeast of Sicamous on July 28, 2024.

Efforts are underway to establish ground access to the Mara Mountain wildfire burning southeast of Sicamous.

The wildfire showed little growth over the weekend and, as of Monday morning, July 29, it remained at 290 hectares, posing no threat to Sicamous or Swansea Point.

On Sunday, July 28, the BC Wildfire Service had an initial attack crew, response officer and line locator at the site establishing safe access routes and assessing where heavy equipment could be brought in.

"While the situation has become more stable due to cooler, wetter weather, residents need to be aware that the Mara Mountain wildfire is not out," warned the Columbia Shuswap Regional District in a Monday morning, July 29 update. "Please stay informed and aware through reliable information channels."

Over the weekend, the CSRD lifted an evacuation alert issued for 14 properties in response to the Newsome Creek wildfire west of Sorrento. Discovered on July 23, lightning was the suspected cause of this wildfire (and the Mara Mountain fire) which reached up to 1 ha. The fire is now classified as under control.
