A Shuswap driver ended up in a collision with a power pole after apparently falling asleep while en route "to milk the cows."

At about 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 11, Chase RCMP received an OnStar crash notification on Highway 1 near Sorrento, where attending officers found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. An assessment by first responders showed the driver to be uninjured.

"He told police he must have fallen asleep while driving home to milk the cows," Const. Sarah Van Wilgenburg said in a media release. "The vehicle crossed the centreline and sheered off a Hydro pole, which sparked the blaze."

The Shuswap Fire Department also responded to the incident and was able to extinguish the fire before it could spread. Highway traffic was disrupted for several hours while BC Hydro crews repaired the damage.
