Spallumcheen's Historic O'Keefe Ranch is experiencing significant financial hardship, and is now appealing to the public for help.

A recent letter to city council from the Vernon-owned ranch indicated that it is , having more than $77,000 in debt it is unable to pay back to the city. The ranch requested that council provide an operational grant of $85,000 to keep the doors open until Nov. 30.

But the ranch is hoping the public can chip in some support as well.

A has been set up Friday by Talia Mattias on behalf of the O'Keefe Ranch and Interior Heritage Society. The campaign calls the ranch a "historical jewel of the Okanagan" with a target of raising $40,000.

The ranch shared the GoFundMe along with a plea to the community.

"The Historic Oº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™Keefe Ranch isnº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™t just a landmark; itº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™s the heartbeat of our communityº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™s past, echoing stories from the 1860s that shaped who we are today," the ranch said in an email that linked to the fundraiser.

"But now, this precious piece of our heritage faces a grave threat. As buildings crumble and vital programs face closure, we risk losing a place where history comes alive for families and students alike."

The ranch said donations will help fund crucial repairs to buildings on site, and will support a number of jobs, educational programs and the "beloved animals who have become symbols of our shared legacy."

"Join us in safeguarding this irreplaceable treasure and ensuring that future generations can cherish and learn from our rich history," the ranch said.

As of Saturday afternoon, the GoFundMe has raised $450 towards its goal.
