A joint police operation in the South Okanagan targeting "high crime areas" has led to the recovery of multiple stolen vehicles and the arrest of a 40-year-old repeat offender.

Penticton RCMP, in conjunction with the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT), says it conducted a five-day operation in response to a recent surge in vehicle theft.

The repeat offender was remanded in custody and is facing several property crime-related charges, police said.

"Penticton RCMP remains committed to investigating property crime in the region and greatly values the invaluable knowledge and expertise provided by a specialized unit like IMPACT," said Superintendent Beth McAndie.

RCMP in Oliver and Midway also say they've recovered multiple stolen vehicles over the last few weeks. In June, three cars, two motor homes, a utility trailer, and an excavator were located.

Upon further investigation, police added, five people were arrested in connection to the stolen property and were released on mandatory reporting conditions with future court dates.

"Reducing auto theft and property crime is a shared responsibility, and RCMP encourage everyone to lock their vehicles, use additional after-market immobilizers, and encourage people not to leave valuables inside vehicles," said Const. Jessie Byers from the Penticton Crime Reduction Unit.

Anyone with information related to such crimes is asked to contact the Penticton RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1(800) 222-8477.
