A nationwide commitment to improve accessibility at beaches has led to upgrades at one of Penticton's most popular summertime spots.

Sudbury Beach, located on the west side of Skaha Lake, is home to new improvements thanks to the Accessing Paradise Pledge.

The pledge º¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù”  a partnership between Mobi-Mats, Wade Watts, and Corona Canada º¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù” was announced in May. Its goal is to improve access at seven beaches in Canada this year, according to the campaign.

Sudbury Beach is the third spot nationwide and first in B.C. to receive such upgrades, with Wellington Beach in Ontario and Quebec's Saint-Zotique the first two.

Local work, including the addition of mats and chairs, was officially deemed complete on July 10.

º¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿ËùœAs a city, weº¦Ðß²ÝÑо¿Ëù™re committed to improving accessibility and this is a welcome development to providing access to our amazing amenities," said Kristen Dixon, the city's general manager of infrastructure.

A local resident nominated Penticton's Sudbury Beach to be part of the Canada-wide campaign, city officials said.

Mats and chairs were later donated to the community, they added.

The mats will be accessible during regular beach hours. People will notice them on the east side of the beach.

Accessible chairs, meanwhile, will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis near the PUP Glow Stand, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
