The municipality of Summerland has won two awards, one for financial reporting and one for its lifeguard courses.

The municipality won the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the 2022 fiscal year.

The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Program was established to encourage municipal governments throughout Canada to publish high-quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports.

The annual financial report was judged by members of the Canadian Review Committee.

This is the second consecutive year Summerland has received this award.

In addition, the Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre was recognized by the B.C. & Yukon Branch of the Lifesaving Society for the most lifeguarding courses run by any facility.

The courses support regional and local needs to recruit, train and retain lifeguards.

Because of staffing shortages, some communities have had to reduce service levels. However, Summerland has been able to maintain its hours and programs.

Back-to-back lifeguard certification courses were offered during a three-month period. As a result, there are newly qualified lifeguards available to meet the needs of Summerland and other communities in the region.

The municipality has received other recognition.

In September, the municipality received an award for its Water and Road Integrated Asset Management Plan. The award was presented at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention.
