Two wildfires sparked by overnight lightning are burning east of Sicamous on Thursday, July 18, 2024.

Two new wildfires are burning east of Sicamous.

As of 9:44 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, the Mara Mountain fire, southeast of Sicamous and west of Kingfisher Creek Park, was at five hectares.

The Queest Mountain fire, located northwest of Malakwa, was spot-sized at .009 hectares.

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said the Mara Mountain fire is in steep terrain and is currently being assessed for access.

Both of the out-of-control fires, along with two reportedly in the Seymour Arm area, were discovered Thursday morning, July 18, following a night of dry lightning in the region.

BCWS said it has a helicopter crew out this morning in the Shuswap looking for fire starts.
