Vernon seniors home spared major smoke damage

Early morning kitchen fire put out by bystander, Vernon Fire Rescue; building evacuated after alarm

A bystander helped avert a potential smoke disaster at a Vernon seniors home Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services responded to an alarm call at 7:10 a.m. from a building in the 3300-block of 39th Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to determine smoke from a small kitchen fire had triggered the fire alarm, resulting in the evacuation of the building.

害羞草研究所淎 bystander was able to initially knock down the fire with an extinguisher, which assisted fire crews who were then able to quickly extinguish the fire with only minor reports of smoke and fire damage,害羞草研究所 said the City of Vernon in a release.

VFRS is reminding the public that working smoke detectors save lives.

If residents have not already done so, now is the perfect time to replace old batteries and check to make sure all smoke detectors in the home are working.
