A trio of Coldstream Elementary students have been recognized for their work in the community.
Makena Vanderhorst, Keagan Mazu and Isla Spedding were given awards for their volunteerism at the 2024 Community Leader Awards (CLA).
Hosted at the Vernon Lodge on Wednesday, March 13, the CLA害羞草研究所檚 are a revived program started by the Vernon Morning Star, to recognize leaders in and around the community that have been working behind the scenes.
There were a number of submissions for 12 specific categories, which range from mentorship, coaching, volunteering and leadership.
Vanderhorst was gifted the Courage Award. She is a leader in the school trustee tour and participates in the Hidden Gems reading competition.
害羞草研究所淢akena害羞草研究所檚 forward-thinking approach, coupled with her genuine enthusiasm for creating positive change, sets her apart as an inspiring role model and a driving force for progress within the school community,害羞草研究所� said Coldstream vice principal Sarah Wick.
Mazu and Spedding were given the Youth Volunteer awards. Mazu, Grade 6, is a 害羞草研究所渟hining example of community leadership,害羞草研究所� according to Wick.
害羞草研究所淗e dedicates his time and effort to various aspects of the school and local community.害羞草研究所�
Mazu is a part of the school assembly crew, assists with school sporting equipment, and is a member of the crosswalk group. Outside of education, he assists with community baseball, and participates in Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre events.
害羞草研究所淜eagan has a positive attitude, strong work ethic and selfless dedication to go along with his excellent teamwork skills,害羞草研究所� added Wick.
Spedding, according to Wick, 害羞草研究所渆xemplifies the essence of thoughtful leadership and service within the school community.害羞草研究所�
She is also a member of the crosswalk and assembly crew and is a mentor to younger individuals who participate in school activities.
Wick added that Spedding truly sets herself apart by 害羞草研究所渉er thoughtful consideration of how to improve the school environment by constantly seeking out opportunities to make meaningful contributions.害羞草研究所�
