Vernon residents were feeling extra generous in 2023.
The City of Vernon has released a report on the revenue generated by the city害羞草研究所檚 kindness meters over the last year.
The meters look like any other parking meter, but their purpose is to raise money for local causes. The city installed five orange-painted kindness meters throughout the downtown after approving their installation in 2016. Donations can be made by inserting coins into the meter or paying online by phone.
In 2023, the kindness meters raised $1,108.45. That害羞草研究所檚 up 317 per cent from the $266 that was raised in 2022. A total of $318.91 was raised in 2021.
The report will be sent to council at its next meeting Monday, Jan. 22. Council can now choose to provide all funds from the kindness meters to one service provider, or add or remove service providers as they see fit.
The $266 raised in 2022 was given to the Salvation Army Food Bank. In 2021, the $318.91 raised went to the People Place Society.
The years with the most funds raised through the kindness meters were the first two years of the program. In 2016, a record $1,863 was raised for the Salvation Army Food Bank and in 2017, $1,798.68 was raised for the Upper Room Mission.
Kindness meter donations have gradually declined since they began collecting funds in 2016, but the donations in 2023 have bucked that trend.
Council will now be tasked with choosing the recipients of last year害羞草研究所檚 donations. City staff have put to together the following list of potential recipients and the work they do:
害羞草研究所� Kindale Development Association - Also known as Under One Roof; provides a broad range of programs and services to persons with developmental and other disabilities.
害羞草研究所� Vernon Native Housing Society - Housing Society for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals and families.
害羞草研究所� Turning Points Collaborative Society - Housing, employment services, shelter and additions recovery.
害羞草研究所� Vernon & District Hospice Society - Provides quality end of life care services, including grief and bereavement programs.
Staff note the list of potential recipients is not exhaustive, and other organizations could be considered as well.
