The candy-colored love letter to musicals 害羞草研究所淟a La Land害羞草研究所� landed a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations on Tuesday, while a notably more diverse field of nominees brushed off two straight years of 害羞草研究所淥scarsSoWhite害羞草研究所� backlash.

害羞草研究所淟a La Land害羞草研究所� matched 害羞草研究所淭itanic害羞草研究所� and 害羞草研究所淎ll About Eve害羞草研究所� for most nominations ever, earning nods for best picture, stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, its jazz-infused songs and its 32-year-old writer-director, Damien Chazelle.

In stark contrast to the last two years of all-white acting nominees, seven actors of colour were nominated out of the 20 actors. A record six black actors were nominated (害羞草研究所淔ences害羞草研究所� stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris of 害羞草研究所淢oonlight,害羞草研究所� Ruth Negga of 害羞草研究所淟oving害羞草研究所� and Octavia Spencer of 害羞草研究所淗idden Figures害羞草研究所�), as was Dev Patel, the British-Indian star of 害羞草研究所淟ion.害羞草研究所�

A trio of acclaimed films led the overhaul, foremost among them Barry Jenkins害羞草研究所� luminous coming-of-age portrait 害羞草研究所淢oonlight.害羞草研究所� Its eight nominations, including best picture, tied for the second most nods. Denzel Washington害羞草研究所檚 fiery August Wilson adaptation 害羞草研究所淔ences害羞草研究所� and Theodore Melfi害羞草研究所檚 crowd-pleasing African American mathematician drama, 害羞草研究所淗idden Figures,害羞草研究所� were also showered with nominations, including best picture.

Jenkins, who was nominated for directing and adapted screenplay, said the nominations for 害羞草研究所淢oonlight害羞草研究所� and other films showed that people were eager to put themselves in the shoes of others.

Nine films out of a possible ten were nominated for best picture. The others were: Denis Villeneuve害羞草研究所檚 cerebral alien thriller 害羞草研究所淎rrival,害羞草研究所� Kenneth Lonergan害羞草研究所檚 New England family drama 害羞草研究所淢anchester by the Sea,害羞草研究所� the West Texas heist thriller 害羞草研究所淗ell or High Water,害羞草研究所� the 害羞草研究所淟ion,害羞草研究所� and Mel Gibson害羞草研究所檚 World War II drama 害羞草研究所淗acksaw Ridge.害羞草研究所�

The biggest surprise of the morning was the strong boost of support for Gibson, who had long been shunned in Hollywood since an anti-Semitic tirade while being arrested for drunk driving in 2006 and a 2011 conviction for domestic violence. Along with the best picture nod, Gibson scored an unexpected best director nomination. Gibson, whose ninth child was born Friday, said in a statement that nothing was more exciting than hearing the nominations read while holding my newborn son.害羞草研究所�

Andrew Garfield, who was nominated for best actor for his performance in 害羞草研究所淗acksaw Ridge,害羞草研究所� said Gibson deserved the moment.

Instead, Meryl Streep, whom President Donald Trump recently derided as 害羞草研究所渙verrated,害羞草研究所� landed her 20th nomination. Her performance in 害羞草研究所淔lorence Foster Jenkins害羞草研究所� was among the best actress nominees that included Stone, Natalie Portman (害羞草研究所淛ackie害羞草研究所�), Ruth Negga (害羞草研究所淟oving害羞草研究所�) and Isabelle Huppert (害羞草研究所淓lle害羞草研究所�). Also left out was Annette Bening for 害羞草研究所�20th Century Women.害羞草研究所�

Best actor favourites Washington, Gosling and Casey Affleck (害羞草研究所淢anchester by the Sea害羞草研究所�) were joined by Garfield and Viggo Mortensen (害羞草研究所淐aptain Fantastic害羞草研究所�). Along with Ali and Patel, the best supporting actor nominees are Lucas Hedges (害羞草研究所淢anchester by the Sea害羞草研究所�), Michael Shannon (害羞草研究所淣octurnal Animals害羞草研究所�) and Jeff Bridges (害羞草研究所淗ell or High Water害羞草研究所�).

Viola Davis, the supporting actress front-runner for her performance in 害羞草研究所淔ences,害羞草研究所� notched the expected nomination. Also up for the category are Harris, Spencer, Nicole Kidman (害羞草研究所淟ion害羞草研究所�) and Michelle Williams (害羞草研究所淢anchester by the Sea害羞草研究所�).

Whether fairly or not, the nominations were measured as a test for the revamped film academy. It害羞草研究所檚 the first Oscars voted on since academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs ushered in new membership rules and added 683 new members as a way to diversify a predominantly white, male and elderly group, which now numbers 6,687.

The inclusion influx Tuesday wasn害羞草研究所檛 driven by any kind of response to the last two Oscars most of the nominated films have been in development for years. And the awards still left many groups unrepresented. No female filmmakers were nominated for best director and outside of Lin-Manuel Miranda (up for his song to 害羞草研究所淢oana害羞草研究所�), Latinos were nearly absent.

Four black directors dominated the documentary category: Ava DuVernay (害羞草研究所淭he 13th害羞草研究所�), Raoul Peck害羞草研究所檚 (害羞草研究所淚 Am Not Your Negro害羞草研究所�), Ezra Edelman (the seven-plus hours 害羞草研究所淥.J.: Made in America害羞草研究所�) and Roger Ross Williams (害羞草研究所淟ife, Animated害羞草研究所�). The other nominee was 害羞草研究所淔ire at Sea.害羞草研究所�

History was marked in other categories. Joi McMillon, who edited 害羞草研究所淢oonlight害羞草研究所� with Nat Sanders, became the first African-American woman nominated for best editing. Bradford Young of 害羞草研究所淎rrival害羞草研究所� was just the second black cinematographer nominated.

Instead of announcing nominees live in Los Angeles, the Oscars streamed pre-produced videos of previous winners introduced each category 害羞草研究所� an innovation that drew mixed reviews.

Though 害羞草研究所淟a La Land,害羞草研究所� 害羞草研究所淎rrival害羞草研究所� and 害羞草研究所淗idden Figures害羞草研究所� are knocking on the door of $100 million at the North American box office, none of the best picture nominees has yet grossed more than $100 million, making this year害羞草研究所檚 best picture nominees one of the lowest grossing bunch ever.

But the regular business of today害羞草研究所檚 corporate-driven Hollywood is increasingly set apart from the industry害羞草研究所檚 awards season, where smaller, critically adored films like 害羞草研究所�12 Years a Slave,害羞草研究所� 害羞草研究所淏irdman,害羞草研究所� 害羞草研究所淏oyhood害羞草研究所� and 害羞草研究所淪potlight害羞草研究所� have recently dominated. Only one major studio 害羞草研究所� Paramount, which distributed 害羞草研究所淎rrival害羞草研究所� and 害羞草研究所淔ences害羞草研究所� 害羞草研究所� scored a best-picture nomination.

Amazon, however, landed its first best-picture nod for Kenneth Lonergan害羞草研究所檚 害羞草研究所淢anchester by the Sea,害羞草研究所� which the streaming retailer partnered with Roadside Attractions to distribute. Netflix also scored three nominations, including two for documentary short and one for feature documentary (害羞草研究所淭he 13th害羞草研究所�).

The dearth of blockbusters will pose a test for host Jimmy Kimmel, who害羞草研究所檒l be presiding over the Feb. 26 Oscarcast for the first time. While the Academy Awards are still among the most-watched TV programs of the year, ratings have been in decline the last two years. Last year害羞草研究所檚 broadcast, which host Chris Rock introduced as 害羞草研究所渢he White People害羞草研究所檚 Choice Awards,害羞草研究所� drew 34.4 million viewers, an eight-year-low.

Like others, Viggo Mortensen expects this year害羞草研究所檚 broadcast to have a strong political undercurrent. 害羞草研究所淭he Trump White House,害羞草研究所� he said Tuesday, 害羞草研究所渋s about, to some degree, shutting people up who you don害羞草研究所檛 like or who don害羞草研究所檛 agree with you, and I think the Oscars will probably be the opposite of that.害羞草研究所�

In the foreign language film category, Maren Ade害羞草研究所檚 Cannes sensation 害羞草研究所淭oni Erdmann,害羞草研究所� from Germany, was nominated alongside Denmark害羞草研究所檚 害羞草研究所淟and of Mine,害羞草研究所� Sweden害羞草研究所檚 害羞草研究所淎 Man Called Ove,害羞草研究所� Australia害羞草研究所檚 害羞草研究所淭anna害羞草研究所� and Iran害羞草研究所檚 害羞草研究所淭he Salesman,害羞草研究所� from Asghar Farhadi, whose 害羞草研究所淎 Separation害羞草研究所� won the award in 2012.
