1 step closer to a Recreation and Wellness Centre at Okanagan College

The Okanagan College is set to receive its first ever gym

After more than 60 years, Okanagan College students in Kelowna will be able to workout on campus.

On June 20, donors, community leaders and members gathered at the Okanagan College Kelowna Campus to hear the announcement that the construction of a Recreation and Wellness Centre is set to begin.

The facility will be used by students, staff, and college athletes and also utilized for events, such as convocations.

"I think about all that sport has given me," said Okanagan College president Neil Fassina.

He said that throughout his years of education, he relied heavily on camps gyms and sport to build community, make friends and develop grit.

"You want to know where my grittiness (sic) comes from? My tenacity? Where does my determination come from?"

"Sport," said Fassina. "Sport gave me everything that is now in my value system."

Fassina said he wants to allow students the opportunity to find their own grit.

The building will be located beside the Centre for Learning Artium, where a parking lot is currently located.

Lois and Cliff Serwa have been strong supporters of the project for many years.

To help the construction of the gym reach fruition, the Serwas have donated $ 1 million to the college. The Serwas will also be matching all future donations up to $500,000 to ensure the project goes smoothly.

After already fundraising $10 million, the college is hoping to raise an additional $4 million to complete the project with state-of-the-art equipment for future generations to enjoy.
