The Regional District of Central Okanagan has put out a reminder about landslides and washouts after one occurred on Westside Road on Friday, Aug. 16 due to heavy rain.

Due to heavy rains in the Central Okanagan on Friday morning (Aug. 16), Westside Road is experiencing a washout in the Bear Creek Area, south of Okanagan Lake Resort.

The washout was first reported around 11 a.m.

A video of the rushing water was shared to a local Facebook page.

According to the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO), when heavy rains happen, the likelihood of flooding is more likely to occur in previously affected wildfire areas. This is why Friday's rain caused a landslide onto Westside Road.

"The RDCO reminds residents adjacent to wildfire-effected areas and waterways to be aware of changes that may affect slope instability and to monitor for potential overland flooding," the RDCO said in a Friday afternoon statement.

After a wildfire, the rate of eroded areas take 3-10 years, depending on many factors including severity of wildfire, soil, slope, and more.

To report a landslide, call the local RCMP, fire department public works department, or the 24-hour toll-free provincial line at 1-800-663-3456. If it's causing an emergency, call 911.
