Lord and Ladyship no longer: Courts change terms for addressing Justices

The change is an effort to make courts more modernized and accessible

B.C.害羞草研究所檚 court systems are moving towards becoming more modern in their in-court language.

Announced Nov. 18 as part of updates to policies within B.C.害羞草研究所檚 Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, Justices will no longer be addressed as 害羞草研究所渕y lady害羞草研究所 and 害羞草研究所渕y lord,害羞草研究所 instead being called 害羞草研究所測our ladyship害羞草研究所 and 害羞草研究所測our lordship害羞草研究所

Meanwhile, Justices of the Court of Appeal will be referred to as 害羞草研究所淐hief Justice害羞草研究所, 害羞草研究所淛ustice害羞草研究所, 害羞草研究所淢adam Justice害羞草研究所, 害羞草研究所淢r. Justice害羞草研究所 or, collectively, as 害羞草研究所淛ustices.害羞草研究所

For most non-lawyers, the changes mean little, but for those in the field the changes are receiving some reaction.

害羞草研究所淭his is an important step in making our courts inclusive and approachable institutions,害羞草研究所 David Brown, a labour and employment lawyer, tweeted.

害羞草研究所淭his approach to honorifics used in the courtroom is much better aligned with gender inclusion, anti-colonialism, and reconciliation,害羞草研究所 Dustin Klaudt, co-chair of the Canadian Bar Association害羞草研究所檚 SOGIC.
