A lifetime of volunteering to help those in emergency situations has earned two local men a prestigious honour.

Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) members Peter Wise and James Viel are being awarded the the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Recipients represent a diverse group of individuals who have made significant contributions to British Columbia or to a particular region or community in the province or attained an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to B.C.

"This distinguished honour recognizes your dedication, unwavering commitment and the profound impact you have made on your communities and our province," said Premier David Eby. "It is a testament to the respect and admiration you have earned."

The Government of B.C. is presenting 551 medals while the medal will be awarded to 30,000 deserving individuals across the country.

"We can't think of two more deserving individuals, our community, province and country are better because of the dedication of James and Pete," VSAR said.

Wise became a member with the 1st Port Hammond Alloutte Rovers, "when he was a wee lad in 1964." And for the last 60 years has served in the search and rescue function until his retirement this year.

Viel is the longest serving VSAR member with 50 years under his belt.
