If anyone thinks board reflects the Central Okanagan community their competency should be questioned

To the editor:

It害羞草研究所檚 regrettable school trustee Cacchioni害羞草研究所檚 resolution to broaden the school district害羞草研究所檚 board (School board rejects adding trustees, Capital News, Nov. 23) was so easily dismissed by the chair and other trustees. Regrettable but not surprising.

Isn害羞草研究所檛 it strange that Julia Fraser, the lone trustee from West Kelowna would speak against the proposal from West Kelowna council, the area she supposedly represents? How is more representation from the Westside a minus? You would think the West Kelowna representative would work with council and press for greater representation from a growing Westside. It害羞草研究所檚 even stranger that Fraser would contravene the mayor when you consider his wife spent countless hours door knocking with Fraser as a candidate.

If anyone thinks the board closely reflects the Central Okanagan community, their competency should be questioned and perhaps they should be disqualified from public office.

There are 22,000 students enrolled in the Central Okanagan School District. According to the 2016 Census, only 450 of the 4,700 Peachland residents are school-aged children. That means Peachland, with two per cent of the student population, receives an unelected representative who gets to be chair. That害羞草研究所檚 about as disproportionate as it comes.

Our students, their families and the public school system suffer from a pathetic lack of vision and leadership at the board level.

Gordon Wiebe, West Kelowna
